Theyyam

Theyyam is the most popular ancient dance forms of North Kerala, India. The myths and legends of the Theyyam deities often relate to the local heroes, heroines and social reformers. The indigenous tribal communities like Malayar, Panan, Vannan and Velan only perform this ancient dance form. The dance or invocation is generally performed in front of the ‘Kaavu’ (Village Shrine). A performance of a particular Theyyam according to its significance and hierarchy may long to 24 hours with intervals. There are approximately 400 types of Theyyam, which includes the popular once like Muthappan, Pottan and Vishnumoorthi.
